Beyond the Classical Electron-Sharing and Dative Bond Picture: The Case of Spin-Polarized Bond

Pedro Salvador et al.

Summary: This article discusses the classification of chemical bonds, pointing out that the traditional categorization of electron-sharing or donor-acceptor/dative bonds may not be accurate enough to describe the bonding properties of certain systems. A third possibility is proposed: spin polarized bonds, illustrated by the case of a NaBH3- cluster. Furthermore, a simple model based on bond order and local spin indicators is provided to distinguish between all three bonding situations.

Weak σ-Hole Triel Bond between C5H5Tr (Tr=B, Al, Ga) and Haloethyne: Substituent and Cooperativity Effects

Qingqing Yang et al.

Summary: The replacement of a CH group of benzene by a triel (Tr) atom places a positive region of electrostatic potential near the Tr atom in the plane of the aromatic ring. This sigma-hole can interact with an X lone pair of XCCH (X=F, Cl, Br, and I) to form a triel bond (TrB). The interaction energy between C5H5Tr and FCCH lies in the range between 2.2 and 4.4 kcal/mol, in the order Tr=B.

Pressure-Induced Evolution of Crystal and Electronic Structure of Ammonia Borane

Han Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the structural stability, phase transition sequence, lattice dynamics, and electronic properties of NH3BH3 at pressures up to 300 GPa. The results show a systematic trend of decreasing band gap with increasing pressure in the high-pressure phases, while all three phases remain nonconducting. These findings provide essential knowledge for further exploration of NH3BH3 in an expanded pressure-temperature phase space.

Anion-anion and anion-neutral triel bonds

Rafal Wysokinski et al.

Summary: The study assesses the ability of TrCl4- (Tr = Al, Ga, In, Tl) to form triel bonds with NH3 and CN- anions through quantum calculations in both gas phase and aqueous medium. Despite the energy investment, strong exothermic complexation reactions are observed, particularly in water.

Unusual substituent effects in the Tr•••Te triel bond

Ruijing Wang et al.

Summary: The strength of triel bonds between the pi-hole on the triel atom of TrR3 and a lone pair on the Te atom of H2Te was examined using ab initio methods. The trend of weakening triel bonds with more electronegative R substituents was observed for Tr = B, while the opposite pattern was noted for Al and Ga. Fluorine substituents on R ' Te-2 base strengthened the triel bond by acting as electron donors, forming secondary chalcogen bonds involving the sigma-holes on Te in F2Te.
