Microplastic pollution and ecological risk assessment in an estuarine environment: The Dongshan Bay of China

Zhong Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated microplastic (MP) pollution in the surface water of Dongshan Bay in southern China, finding that the main sources of MPs were PE, PP, and PS foam, leading to a minor ecological risk. The research results provided baseline data and ecological risk assessment methods for MP pollution in Dongshan Bay.

Abolfazl Naji et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the release of microplastics from the wastewater outfall in Bandar Abbas City into the Persian Gulf, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most commonly recovered polymers in wastewater and sludge. Further research is needed at water treatment plants in the region to better assess microplastic discharge into the Persian Gulf.

Aggregation kinetics of fragmental PET nanoplastics in aqueous environment: Complex roles of electrolytes, pH and humic acid

Shunan Dong et al.

Summary: The aggregation kinetics of fragmental polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics in aqueous environment were studied under various chemistry conditions. It was found that the aggregation of PET nanoplastics increased with higher electrolyte concentrations and lower solution pH, especially in the presence of divalent cations. Additionally, the presence of humic acid was shown to significantly inhibit the aggregation of PET nanoplastics.

Summary: Tiny plastic particles, including microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are considered emerging contaminants with formation mechanisms such as mechanical abrasion. Research on the environmental fate and ecosystem toxicity of NPs is limited compared to MPs, calling for further exploration in these areas.

Cotransport and deposition of colloidal polystyrene microplastic particles and tetracycline in porous media: The impact of ionic strength and cationic types

Peng Zhao et al.

Summary: The co-transport behaviors of colloidal polystyrene microplastic particles (PSMPs) and tetracycline (TC) were found to be complex and influenced by ionic strengths in saturated porous media. The presence of TC affected the mobility of PSMPs differently in K+ and Ca2+ solutions, while the attachment efficiencies of both PSMPs and TC showed non-linear and non-monotonic changes with increases in ionic strength, particularly in CaCl2 solutions. The balance between transport-inhibiting and transport-facilitating effects, such as TC adsorption on PSMPs, played a critical role in the observed changes.
