A Bidentate Iodine(III)-Based Halogen-Bond Donor as a Powerful Organocatalyst

Flemming Heinen et al.

Summary: This study presents the first application of a bidentate bis(iodolium) salt as an organocatalyst in various reactions, surpassing the performance of iodine(I)-based organocatalysts and approaching that of strong Lewis acids like BF3. Coordination of the bidentate XB donor to the substrate was confirmed through structural analysis and DFT calculations of the transition states.

Neutral Chiral Tetrakis-Iodo-Triazole Halogen-Bond Donor for Chiral Recognition and Enantioselective Catalysis

Florian Ostler et al.

Summary: The study introduced a novel chiral tetrakis-iodo-triazole structure as a neutral halogen bond donor for chiral anion-recognition and enantioinduction in ion-pair organocatalysis. It demonstrated selective recognition of chiral dicarboxylates and asymmetric induction in a benchmark organocatalytic reaction using the halogen bond donor, with inversions in chiral recognition, enantioselectivity, and chiroptical properties relative to the related hydrogen donor.

Tuning the Halogen Bonding Strength of Cyclic Diaryliodonium Salts

Dominik L. Reinhard et al.

Summary: Diaryliodonium(III) salts have been increasingly recognized as a new class of strong halogen bonding noncovalent organocatalysts. Comparisons between five-membered iodolium salts and six-membered iodininium derivatives have shown that the former are stronger halogen bond donors in terms of binding constants towards Lewis bases.

Iodine-Catalyzed Diels-Alder Reactions

Thiemo Arndt et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction can be efficiently conducted under mild and metal-free conditions using molecular iodine as the catalyst, leading to high endo selectivity in a short amount of time. Mechanistic studies revealed a halogen-bond activation mechanism and showed that iodine performs as well as typical metallic Lewis acids in this reaction.

Enantioselective Michael addition to vinyl phosphonates via hydrogen bond-enhanced halogen bond catalysis

Mikk Kaasik et al.

Summary: An asymmetric Michael addition of malononitrile to vinyl phosphonates was achieved using hydrogen bond-enhanced bifunctional halogen bond (XB) catalysis, demonstrating the key role of halogen bonding in activation of the Michael acceptors through the phosphonate group. This is the first example of using XBs for activating organophosphorus compounds in synthesis. The iodo-perfluorophenyl group was found to be a better directing unit than different iodo- and nitro-substituted phenyl groups, leading to excellent yields, diastereoselectivities, and good enantioselectivities in the products.
