Cytotoxic Activity and Metabolic Profiling of Fifteen Euphorbia Species

Seham S. El-Hawary et al.

Summary: Testing the cytotoxic potential of fifteen Euphorbia species revealed highest activity of E. officinarum L. against human colon adenocarcinoma cell line, and E. lactea Haw. against human hepatoma and human breast adenocarcinoma cell lines. Metabolic profiling led to the annotation of 44 natural compounds, with diterpenoids as the major class. Dereplication approach and multivariate data analysis were used to identify compounds responsible for cytotoxic activity. Results of Principle component analysis aligned with biological testing, emphasizing the cytotoxic properties of E. lactea Haw.

Phytotoxic Effects of Plant Essential Oils: A Systematic Review and Structure-Activity Relationship Based on Chemometric Analyses

Ahmed M. Abd-ElGawad et al.

Summary: This review discusses the phytotoxic essential oils (EOs) and their chemical compositions reported from 1972 to 2020, highlighting the importance of oxygenated terpenes, mono- and sesquiterpenes in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Monoterpenes such as pinene, 1,8 cineole, linalool, and carvacrol, as well as sesquiterpenes like caryophyllene and its derivatives, are identified as key components in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the pure form activities, determine field application, assess safety, and understand modes of action for these compounds.
