In this study, the oxidation of Ti-6Al-4V surface in a liquid environment subjected to ozonation was investigated. XPS spectra were collected to analyze the oxidative effect of the proposed Ti-alloy surface modification and discussed the possible mechanism of the oxidation process.
For the first time, the oxidation of Ti-6Al-4V surface was performed in a liquid environment subjected to ozonation. Based on the XPS spectra collected the oxidative effect of proposed Ti-alloy surface modifica-tion was discussed. It was found a significant increase in the amount of oxygen double-bonded with Ti with simultaneous diminution in C amount. The possible mechanism of the oxidation process is explained as follows: the intensive reaction of ozone with hydroxyl ions present in the reaction elec-trolyte results in the advanced generation of a variety of active radicals occurring in the chain reaction. These reactive species containing oxygen, diffuse to the surface of Ti-alloy, and affects its oxidation with the accompaniment of rebuilding of oxygen bonding with Ti. Within this scenario, the titanium-peroxy and peroxide complexes can be formed on the Ti surface what in part is confirmed by the increased amount of surface oxygen in the surface.
