Separation and concentration of rare earth elements from wastewater using electrodialysis technology

Changbai Li et al.

Summary: Rare earth elements (REEs), including Scandium (Sc), are essential raw materials for modern technologies and efforts are being made to explore their procurement from secondary resources with sustainability and circular economy principles. Electrodialysis (ED) technology has been successfully utilized for separating and concentrating REEs from diluted aqueous systems, showing promising results in recovering Sc3+ ions from wastewater with high efficiency and low energy consumption. Systematic assessments using various parameters confirmed the effectiveness of ED process in removing Sc3+ ions, indicating its potential for practical applications in resource recovery.
