Synthesis of nanoscale zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) using reverse micro-emulsion for Congo red adsorption

The synthesis conditions were optimized to achieve a nano ZIF-8 with a specific surface area of 1477 m(2)/g, showing a uniform particle size distribution of 15 to 35 nm. Adsorption of Congo red on nano ZIF-8 was found to be an endothermic process following pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with maximum predicted adsorption capacity of 1339.8 mg/g at 323 K. Adsorption mechanism analysis indicated electrostatic interactions and physical attractions including hydrogen bonds and pi-pi bond interactions play a major role.
