Binary mineral sulfides sorbent with wide temperature range for rapid elemental mercury uptake from coal combustion flue gas

Shengcai Wang et al.

Summary: Developing efficient sorbents with rapid kinetics is the main challenge for Hg-0 capture from coal combustion flue gas. A binary mineral sulfide-based material combining copper sulfide and zinc sulfide was reported for the first time for Hg-0 removal over a wide temperature range, showing promising potential as an alternative to traditional activated carbon for Hg-0 capture.

The adsorption mechanisms of Hg0 on marcasite-type metal selenides: The influences of metal-terminated site

Hailong Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the immobilization mechanisms of elemental mercury on marcasite-type metal selenides based on density functional theory, finding that the adsorptions of Hg-0 at metal sites are mainly influenced by the 4p orbitals of metal atoms, while interactions at Se sites are affected by both the 5s and 4p orbitals of Se atoms. The influences of metal-terminated sites on Hg-0 adsorptions at Se sites are relatively limited.

Light irradiation inhibits mercury adsorption by mineral sulfide sorbent

Jiexia Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that light irradiation significantly inhibited the removal efficiency of CuS sorbent for Hg-0, mainly by hindering the formation of copper amalgam and accelerating the decomposition of copper amalgam into Hg-0.

Recyclable chalcopyrite sorbent for mercury removal from coal combustion flue gas

Jianping Yang et al.

Summary: This study utilized the abundant mineral chalcopyrite as an efficient trap for Hg-0 sequestration, showing excellent removal performance in a wide temperature range and minimal interference from typical flue gas components. The adsorption capacity and rate of CuFeS2 were significantly higher than commercial activated carbons, attributed to the oxidizing and immobilizing abilities of disulfide ligands, and the sorbent could be regenerated through thermal decomposition, saving operation costs. CuFeS2 is identified as a potential, cost-effective trap for efficient remediation of Hg-0 from coal combustion flue gas.
