Summary: A novel hydroxy-rich ultrathin BiOCl-X was prepared and showed strong potential for photocatalytic degradation of microplastics at room temperature. Photocatalytic mechanism studies revealed that surface hydroxyl groups of BiOCl can enhance the production of hydroxyl radicals, boosting degradation performance. This work provides new insights into the importance of surface hydroxyl groups in the photocatalytic degradation of microplastics.

Results showed that PAC was more effective than FeCl3, especially in alkaline conditions. The optimal hybrid catalyst BiCNx-5 shows excellent photocatalytic performance with a NH3 production rate of 576.11 μmol g(-1) h(-1) under visible light illumination.
