Layered ternary MAX phases and their MX particulate derivative reinforced metal matrix composite:A review

Wenqiang Hu et al.

Summary: The unique combination of metallic and ceramic-like properties in MAX phases has driven the development of MAX/metal matrix composites (MMCs) since the early '90s. These composites exhibit high strength and sufficient deformation capacity due to the unique deformation behavior of MAX. The in-situ MAX/MMC with MX derivatives show superior mechanical strengths and ductility, paving the way for advanced composite materials.

Synthesis and high temperature corrosion behaviour of nearly monolithic Ti3AlC2 MAX phase in molten chloride salt

Carl Magnus et al.

Summary: A nearly monolithic MAX phase material containing 95 wt% Ti3AlC2 and 5 wt% TiCx was synthesized by spark plasma sintering under vacuum conditions. The corrosion behavior of Ti3AlC2 in molten LiCl-KCl salt was investigated, revealing Al dissolution causing delamination of the layered structure and leading to the formation of a Ti3C2Cl2 exfoliation layer. The de-twinning of Ti3C2 layers and formation of nonstoichiometric TiC0.67 may be attributed to the substitution of Cl- anions by O.

Microstructural, mechanical, and wear properties characterization and strengthening mechanisms of Al7075/SiCnp composites processed through ultrasonic cavitation assisted stir-casting

Thella Babu Rao

Summary: Al7075 matrix composites reinforced with nano-SiC particles were successfully manufactured using an ultrasonic cavitation assisted stir casting method, resulting in improved mechanical properties with increased nano-SiC particle content. The presence of nano-SiC particles led to matrix phase grain refinement and the dominant strengthening mechanisms included thermal mismatch and Orowan strengthening. The wear resistance of the composites showed significant enhancement compared to the matrix alloy, especially with the addition of 2.0% nano-SiC particles reinforcement.

Thermal shock behavior of co-continuous TiCx-Cu cermets in air and anaerobic environment

Cong Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that TiCx-Cu cermet has good thermal shock resistance and its residual flexural strength is less affected by thermal shock. The recrystallization and refinement of metal phase grains during the thermal shock process improve the thermal shock performance of the cermet.

Preparation and characteristics of Ti3AlC2 -Al3Ti/Al composite materials synthesized from pure Al and Ti3AlC2 powders

Yuanbo Wang et al.

Summary: A novel Ti3AlC2-Al3Ti/Al composite was fabricated by hot pressing Ti3AlC2 and pure Al powders, forming a strong interfacial bonding. The mechanical properties of the composite were significantly enhanced, mainly attributed to load transfer strengthening, thermal mismatch strengthening, and dispersion strengthening mechanisms.
