Structural evolution and mechanical properties of Cansas-III SiC fibers after thermal treatment up to 1700 °C

Yihan Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of thermal treatment on Cansas-III SiC fibers were studied at temperatures ranging from 900 to 1700 degrees C in argon atmosphere for 1-5 hours. Results showed that at 1300 degrees C, the surface of the fibers became rough with visible particles. With increasing temperature and holding time, the average tensile strength of the SiC fibers decreased gradually from 1.81 to 1.01 GPa, possibly due to the increase of critical defect sizes, grain growth, and phase transformation.
