Microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of multilayer Ti-DLC thick films on Al alloys by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technology

Hongshuai Cao et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the influence of Ti content on the microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties of Al alloy films. It was found that the Ti content affects the microstructure and performance of the films. The amorphous film with Ti content greater than 6.06 at.% shows better wear resistance.

Improved tribological behavior of lubricating oil dispersed with hybrid nanoparticles of functionalized carbon spheres and graphene nano platelets

Panickar Radhika et al.

Summary: A novel synthesis method of Functionalized Carbon Spheres coated with Graphene nanoplatelets using sonication technique was reported. The hybrid nanoparticles effectively improved the tribological characteristics of lubricating oils, showing a remarkable reduction in the Coefficient of Friction. The addition of hybrid nanoparticles led to excellent dispersion and stability without the use of surfactants.

Tribochemical mechanism of superlubricity in graphene quantum dots modified DLC films under high contact pressure

Xuan Yin et al.

Summary: By designing three series of tribo-couples based on amorphous carbon films modified by graphene quantum dots and conducting tests under harsh conditions, it was found that the lubrication mechanism of GQDs can achieve a superlubricity state; additionally, the formation of a nanostructured sliding interface is crucial in this process.

Effect of bias voltage on the microstructure and properties of Nb-DLC films prepared by a hybrid sputtering system

Ji Cheng Ding et al.

Summary: Diamond like carbon (DLC) films doped with Nb were prepared by a hybrid sputtering system, and the impact of bias voltage on the morphology and chemical bonding of the films was investigated. Increasing bias voltage led to changes in microstructure, surface morphology, and improved sp(3)-C bonding fraction. Higher bias voltage conditions resulted in enhanced hardness due to increased sp(3)-C fraction, modulated stress, and formation of hard carbide phase.

Determination of carbonization depths in Ti substrates in diamond growth atmospheres and modified diffusion models

Xinchang Wang et al.

Summary: The behaviors of diamond coated Ti-related parts are significantly influenced by carbonized interlayers, making it essential to determine or predict the carbonization depth during diamond growth. By following Fick's law of diffusion, it is predicted that carbonization depths in Ti and Ti-6Al-4V substrates will hardly reach 30 μm within 16 hours. EDS line scanning is selected as the practical characterization method with sufficient accuracy and convenience.

Energetic stability and geometrical structure of variously terminated and N-doped diamond (111) surfaces - A theoretical DFT study

Xinchang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, H-, O-, OH-, and F-terminated N-doped diamond surfaces were calculated using density functional theory, revealing that the N dopant has different effects depending on its position and the terminating species. The adsorption energy is decreased when the N dopant is in the first carbon layer, while it is slightly increased when in the second carbon layer. Oxygen shows the highest reactivity to attacks, and N dopants have slight influences on the reactivity of adjacent adsorbates.

Electrochemical performance and corrosion mechanism of Cr-DLC coating on nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy by magnetron sputtering

Kong Weicheng et al.

Summary: A Cr-DLC coating was successfully deposited on the surface of nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy using magnetron sputtering, with CrN acting as an important connection layer between the coating and the alloy. The electrochemical corrosion test results showed that the Cr-DLC coating exhibited the best corrosion resistance, effectively protecting the nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy from corrosion.

Summary: A magnetron-sputtered Cr-diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating was deposited on nitrided Ti6Al4V alloys (TAs) with a CrN interlayer. The coating exhibited amorphous carbon structure with dispersed Cr clusters, confirming the presence of G and D peaks. The nanohardness and elastic modulus of the coating were found to be 19.29 and 168.8 GPa, respectively, with an adhesive force of 20.70 N improved by the Cr-C bond in the CrN interlayer.
