Hyperspectral imaging and chemometrics reveal wood acetylation on different spatial scales

Summary: Acetylation is a commonly used chemical treatment method to improve the hygroscopic properties of wood, but its effects on the different hierarchical structures of wood are still poorly understood. This study used hyperspectral near-infrared image regression to determine the acetylation of wood surfaces, revealing significant differences in the acetylation of earlywood and latewood and shedding light on the different durations required for complete acetylation of earlywood and latewood cells.
