Profiling of phenolic compounds in desiccation-tolerant and non-desiccation-tolerant Linderniaceae

Maike Passon et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the secondary plant metabolites of resurrection plants and a desiccation sensitive species. Results showed the presence of eight phenylethanoid glycosides and one flavone compound in the plants, with verbascoside being the predominantly synthesized phenylethanoid in all three plant species. The amount of verbascoside correlated with the degree of desiccation tolerance, suggesting a potential role as an antioxidant in the protective system.

Unexplored dimensions of variability in vegetative desiccation tolerance

Rose A. Marks et al.

Summary: Desiccation tolerance has evolved repeatedly in different land plant lineages, leading to substantial variation in phenotype and underlying mechanisms across diverse lineages, populations, and individual plants. Leveraging natural diversity of desiccation-tolerant plants can improve our mechanistic understanding of desiccation tolerance. It is important to quantify this variability across different lineages, populations, and life stages of plants, as it can provide deeper insights into the complexities of desiccation tolerance.

To dry perchance to live: Insights from the genome of the desiccation-tolerant biocrust moss Syntrichia caninervis

Anderson T. Silva et al.

Summary: With global climate change, water scarcity threatens agro/ecosystems. The extremophile desert moss Syntrichia caninervis has undergone a single whole genome duplication event and evidence of chromosomal losses. The transcriptomic response to desiccation identified four clusters of novel genes, offering new perspectives for understanding plant desiccation tolerance evolution.

Ectopic expression of human apolipoprotein D in Arabidopsis plants lacking chloroplastic lipocalin partially rescues sensitivity to drought and oxidative stress

Patricia Henri et al.

Summary: LCNP is a chloroplastic lipocalin induced in response to various abiotic stresses, while its protective mechanism is largely unknown. In this study, it was found that human APOD can partially compensate for the lack of LCNP in Arabidopsis thaliana under different abiotic stresses. This suggests a conserved function of APOD and LCNP in stressful conditions.

Summary: The study revealed the dynamic changes in gene, protein, and metabolite levels of the resurrection plant Craterostigma plantagineum during dehydration and recovery, emphasizing the roles in regulating photosynthesis, energy metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. These changes indicate that plants undergo precise metabolic reprogramming to optimize performance and enhance drought tolerance under stress.
