Statistical Forecasts for the Occurrence of Precipitation Outperform Global Models over Northern Tropical Africa

Peter Vogel et al.

Summary: Statistical forecasts based on a simple logistic regression model show considerable potential for improvement in short-term global ensemble predictions of rainfall over northern tropical Africa, outperforming climatology-based forecasts. The performance of the model is related to African easterly waves and mesoscale convective systems, with the only exception being the dry outer tropics where extratropical influences dominate.

Subseasonal Precipitation Prediction for Africa: Forecast Evaluation and Sources of Predictability

Felipe M. de Andrade et al.

Summary: This study evaluates seasonal precipitation forecasts for Africa, indicating that the ECMWF model performs better in East Africa and there is a significant decrease in forecast skill in weeks 3-4. Probabilistic forecasts show reasonable skill in wet regions, but lower quality for near-normal categories.

Do Convection-Permitting Ensembles Lead to More Skillful Short-Range Probabilistic Rainfall Forecasts over Tropical East Africa?

Carlo Cafaro et al.

Summary: This study found that convection-permitting ensemble prediction systems (CP-ENS) have skill in predicting heavy rainfall over tropical East Africa and outperform deterministic CP forecasts and global ensembles in terms of forecasting rainfall location and event discrimination. However, the skill scores are lower than those found for CP-EPS in the midlatitudes. Further research should focus on improving ensemble spread, including for the global ensemble.
