Microstimulation in Different Parts of the Periaqueductal Gray Generates Different Types of Vocalizations in the Cat

Hari H. Subramanian et al.

Summary: Microstimulation in different parts of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) in cats generated four types of vocalization, with positive and negative vocal expressions being produced in different regions, leading to specific motor coordination of vocalizations. The findings could serve as a valuable model for diagnostic assessment of voice disorders in humans.

Olfaction in Lamprey Pallium Revisited-Dual Projections of Mitral and Tufted Cells

Shreyas M. Suryanarayana et al.

Summary: In lampreys, two separate afferent channels from olfactory glomeruli to different targets in the brain have been identified. Mitral-like cells project directly to the piriform cortex, while smaller tufted-like cells project exclusively to the dorsomedial telencephalic nucleus. The tufted-like cells exhibit short-latency activation and terminate with mossy fibers on dmtn cells, eliciting large unitary EPSPs without concurrent inhibition.

Habenula as the experience-dependent controlling switchboard of behavior and attention in social conflict and learning

Hitoshi Okamoto et al.

Summary: The habenula, one of the most evolutionarily conserved parts of the brain, plays a crucial role in controlling behavior in response to aversive stimuli. Recent studies in zebrafish have revealed new roles of two parallel neural pathways from the dorsal habenula to the interpeduncular nucleus in controlling behavioral choices during social conflicts, which can be modifiable based on the internal state of the fish. These studies demonstrate a novel function of the habenula as an integrated switchboard for controlling behavior, directing attention either internally with self-centered focus or externally with others-oriented focus.
