Classifying settlement types from multi-scale spatial patterns of building footprints

Warren C. Jochem et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a method for classifying different types of settlements using building footprint data extracted from high-resolution imagery to support monitoring of urban areas. The approach uses Gaussian mixture modeling to form clusters and has been applied in countries such as Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mozambique, showing the potential of computational methods in extracting meaningful information from urban areas.
