Improving the biogas yield of manure: Effect of pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of the recalcitrant fraction of manure

Muhammad Usman Khan et al.

Summary: The study found that different pretreatments can improve the anaerobic digestion efficiency of animal manure, with the best performance achieved by 3% NaOH pretreatment at 180 degrees Celsius, leading to increased volatile solids conversion and methane yield. After pretreatment, the cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content in digested manure fibers were reduced, resulting in higher methane conversion rates during anaerobic digestion.
