The effect of the polarised cathode, formate and ethanol on chain elongation of acetate in microbial electrosynthesis

Paniz Izadi et al.

Summary: In microbial electrosynthesis, providing additional electron donors can direct the production towards more diverse and longer chain organic chemicals. Supplying formate and ethanol significantly increased the production of butyrate and butanol, while ethanol was found to provide sufficient energy for butyrate production from acetate in the absence of a polarised cathode. The study suggests that the initial reduction of acetate to ethanol, consumed for the production of C4 products through acetate, could be associated with the production of C4 products in the presence of only a cathodic electrode or a cathodic electrode and formate.

Micro-microbial electrochemical sensor equipped with combined bioanode and biocathode for water biotoxicity monitoring

Na Chu et al.

Summary: The development of low-cost biosensors for water monitoring is expected to reduce potential risks from contamination accidents. This study reported a novel micro-microbial electrochemical sensor using combined bioanode and biocathode as the sensing element. By adjusting the ratio of bioanode to biocathode, a lower power generation can be achieved with a similar or even higher toxic response. Additionally, the voltage output is affected by both flow rate and acetate concentration.
