Multiple roles of Ca2+ in the interaction of ciprofloxacin with activated sludge: Spectroscopic investigations of extracellular polymeric substances

Jie Yu et al.

Summary: Calcium ion significantly inhibits the binding of ciprofloxacin to sludge and interacts with EPS and CIP binding system in distinct ways. The addition of Ca2+ increases association and binding constants, while decreasing the number of binding sites, leading to changes in functional groups of EPS and secondary structure of proteins. The competition for amide I C=O bonds by cations is responsible for the Ca2+-induced release of CIP from sludge, suggesting the potential release of CIP from high saline wastewater and cation-conditioned sludge.

Response of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge to residual ferric ions

Zhang-Wei He et al.

Summary: The study found that residual ferric ions had significant effects on the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge, with different concentrations of FI leading to varying impacts on methane production and short chain fatty acids accumulation. Low FI levels enhanced methane production, while high FI levels inhibited acidogenesis and methanogenesis.

Ionic response of algal-bacterial granular sludge system during biological phosphorus removal from wastewater

Jixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Biological phosphorus removal involves changes in Ac-, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in wastewater, with the presence of algae not beneficial for PAOs to remove P but more K+ and P uptake by algae in AB-AGS suggesting its potential for manufacturing biofertilizer.

Understanding of the mechanism of extracellular polymeric substances of aerobic granular sludge against tetracycline from the perspective of fluorescence properties

Zhengwen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the resistance mechanism of AGS-EPS against tetracycline, showing that tetracycline interacted with proteins and humic acid in AGS-EPS by forming stable complexes. Components with larger molecular weight in AGS-EPS interacted with tetracycline prior to those with smaller molecular weight, and tetracycline had the potential to bind with divalent cations in AGS-EPS, causing conformation changes of proteins.
