Microarray Patches: Poking a Hole in the Challenges Faced When Delivering Poorly Soluble Drugs

Alejandro J. Paredes et al.

Summary: Poorly soluble drugs make up a significant portion of the pharmaceutical market, with microarray patches (MAPs) showing potential as a strategy for delivering such drugs through the skin. The future of MAPs looks promising in terms of providing a convenient and effective therapeutic alternative for patients.

Selective delivery of silver nanoparticles for improved treatment of biofilm skin infection using bacteria-responsive microparticles loaded into dissolving microneedles

Andi Dian Permana et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of utilizing silver nanoparticles synthesized using green tea extract as antibiofilm agents against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. By incorporating silver nanoparticles into bacteria-responsive microparticles, the dermatokinetic profiles of silver nanoparticles were enhanced, leading to the eradication of bacterial bioburdens in an ex vivo biofilm model in rat skin. These findings demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of loading silver nanoparticles into responsive microparticles for improved antibiofilm activities.

Microneedle array systems for long-acting drug delivery

Lalit K. Vora et al.

Summary: The development of microneedles (MNs) assisted drug delivery technologies has been active for over two decades. Different types of MNs are designed to deliver therapeutic materials directly into the dermal and ocular space for sustained or controlled release of active ingredients. Challenges lie ahead in realizing the full potential of sustained-release long-acting MNs in clinical applications.

Microarray patches: Breaking down the barriers to contraceptive care and HIV prevention for women across the globe

Alejandro J. Paredes et al.

Summary: Microarray patches (MAPs) are a novel platform for delivering hormonal contraception and antiretroviral drugs, providing enhanced drug delivery to the systemic circulation. These minimally invasive patches can be self-administered by users, reducing the burden on healthcare personnel and eliminating the risk of needle-stick injuries.

Novel tip-loaded dissolving and implantable microneedle array patches for sustained release of finasteride

Alejandro J. Paredes et al.

Summary: The study developed long-acting dissolving and implantable PLGA MAPs for systemic release of FND for at least two weeks, using micromoulding methodology to obtain mechanically strong tip-loaded MAPs with pyramidal geometry. In vitro studies demonstrated that these patches could release the drug continuously, deposit a certain amount of FND in the skin, and gradually release it into the receptor compartment.
