Soft-rigid synergistic reinforcement of PHBV composites with functionalized cellulose nanocrystals and amorphous recycled polycarbonate

Fang Li et al.

Summary: Composite films of PHBV/PC/CNC-Cc were prepared via a Pickering emulsion approach, showing a significant soft-rigid synergistic effect on the performance of the PHBV matrix with the addition of PC and CNC-Cc. The best composite film exhibited outstanding mechanical strength/toughness, UV shielding, antioxidant, and antibacterial abilities due to the dynamic competition effect of amorphous PC and rigid CNC-Cc on the PHBV microstructure and interaction.

Optimization of cultivation medium and cyclic fed-batch fermentation strategy for enhanced polyhydroxyalkanoate production by Bacillus thuringiensis using a glucose-rich hydrolyzate

Sarisha Singh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the concept of cyclic fed-batch fermentation for enhanced PHA productivity by Bacillus thuringiensis using a glucose-rich hydrolyzate as the sole carbon source. The cyclic strategy resulted in almost threefold increase in biomass concentration and fourfold increase in PHA concentration compared with batch fermentation. The approach showcases the potential of coupling fermentation strategies with hydrolyzate from lignocellulosic waste to achieve high cell density biomass and enhanced PHA productivity.

Biodegradability and improved mechanical performance of polyhydroxyalkanoates/agave fiber biocomposites compatibilized by different strategies

Miguel Gallardo-Cervantes et al.

Summary: In this study, biocomposites made of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and natural fibers were produced with different compatibilization strategies to enhance fiber-matrix interaction. Propionylation of fibers was found to be the most effective strategy for improving mechanical properties and reducing water absorption in the biocomposites. Overall, the impact strength of all biocomposites was significantly improved without negatively affecting the biodegradability of PHA.
