High-resolution global map of smallholder and industrial closed-canopy oil palm plantations

Adria Descals et al.

Summary: This study utilized deep-learning and remotely sensed data to create a global map of oil palm plantations in 2019, distinguishing between industrial and smallholder plantations with high accuracy on a global scale. Southeast Asia emerged as the main producing region, accounting for 89% of global oil palm plantations. The research also revealed significant regional variations in the ratio of industrial versus smallholder growers.
