Demographic risk assessment for a harvested species threatened by climate change: polar bears in the Chukchi Sea

Eric Regehr et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a threat to global biodiversity, with many species vulnerable to its impacts being important to humans for various reasons. This study focused on polar bears in the Chukchi Sea subpopulation, applying a novel population modeling-management framework to evaluate subsistence harvest. The results suggest that a specific harvest strategy could sustain the subpopulation abundance above a designated threshold for the next 35 years, emphasizing the importance of proactive management in the face of climate change impacts.
