Effect of hydrophilic polymer modification of reverse osmosis membrane surfaces on organic adsorption and biofouling behavior

Daisuke Saeki et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of hydrophilic polymers modified on RO membrane surfaces on the adsorption of organic foulants causing biofouling. The research found that each polymer exhibited different adsorption properties against organic foulants, and none effectively prevented the adsorption of polysaccharides. During the biofouling test, the zwitterionic polymer, MEDSAH, showed superior anti-biofouling properties compared to other hydrophilic polymers due to its high anti-adsorption property against bacteria.
