Production Chain of First-Generation Sugarcane Bioethanol: Characterization and Value-Added Application of Wastes

Milla Araujo de Almeida et al.

Summary: The search for energy security and environmental sustainability has led to an increasing interest in biofuel production worldwide. Although first-generation bioethanol is considered a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels, its production process generates significant amounts of environmentally harmful waste. This review article provides an in-depth analysis of the production chain of sugarcane-based first-generation bioethanol and the characterization of the waste products. The review highlights the current value-added uses of these wastes and their potential for the development of innovative products.

Sustainable Second-Generation Ethanol Production from Switchgrass Biomass via Co-fermentation of Pentoses and Hexoses Using Novel Wild Yeasts

Felipe Antonio Fernandes Antunes et al.

Summary: The production of second-generation ethanol using switchgrass as feedstock involves sequential dilute acid and alkaline pretreatment and fermentation by different yeast strains for hemicellulose and cellulose-derived sugar streams. The wild Scheffersomyces parashehatae strain showed lower ethanol yield and volumetric productivity compared to the control Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain for the C6 sugar stream but provided a higher overall yield by combining hemicellulose and cellulose-derived sugars. This two-stage pretreatment and fermentation process offers a pathway for maximizing switchgrass carbohydrate utilization in 2G ethanol production.

Enhancement of saccharification and ethanol conversion from tobacco stalks by chemical pretreatment

Guo-Ning Guo et al.

Summary: The study showed that pretreatment with NaOH significantly increased the sugar yield of tobacco stalks, with glucose and xylose being the main sugars in the hydrolysates. Moreover, pretreated tobacco stalks could achieve higher sugar and ethanol yields through simultaneous saccharification and ethanol fermentation, offering a new avenue for resource utilization of tobacco waste.
