A New Perspective on Ameliorating Depression-Like Behaviors: Suppressing Neuroinflammation by Upregulating PGC-1α

Xinxin Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the role of PGC-1 alpha in depression and explored its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that PGC-1 alpha expression was inhibited in mice exposed to CUMS or LPS, while baicalin could increase its expression and alleviate depression-like behaviors. Baicalin also attenuated neuroinflammation in mice through regulating NF-kappa B signaling, suggesting that PGC-1 alpha might be a therapeutic target for depression.

Microglial activation elicits a negative affective state through prostaglandin-mediated modulation of striatal neurons

Anna M. Klawonn et al.

Summary: The activation of microglia in neurological diseases, especially in major depression, has been found to be crucial in inducing negative affective states. This is mediated by the microglial production of cytokines and prostaglandins, leading to alterations in the excitability of striatal neurons. Intervention targeting this mechanism could potentially alleviate depressive symptoms in diseases involving microglial activation.

Opioid System Contributes to the Trifluoromethyl-Substituted Diselenide Effectiveness in a Lifestyle-Induced Depression Mouse Model

Sabrina Grendene Mueller et al.

Summary: The consumption of energy-dense foods and ethanol are linked to mood disorders. The compound m-Trifluoromethyl-diphenyl diselenide has been shown to have antidepressant-like effects by modulating opioid and glucocorticoid receptors as well as acting as an antioxidant. This study found that this compound could alleviate depressive-like behaviors and oxidative stress induced by an energy-dense diet and ethanol in young mice.
