Characterization of Late Cretaceous to Miocene source rocks in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: An integrated numerical approach of stratigraphic forward modelling and petroleum system modelling

Summary: Stratigraphic forward modelling was used to simulate the deposition of Upper Cretaceous, Eocene and Oligo-Miocene source rocks in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, showing that the source rocks in Upper Cretaceous and Eocene are mainly located along the Levant Margin and the Eratosthenes Seamount, while the Oligo-Miocene intervals have terrestrial organic matter contributing the most to the TOC content throughout the basin. The study also identified thermal maturation zones and petroleum generation timings in the respective source rock intervals.

Modeling petroleum generation, retention, and expulsion from the Vaca Muerta Formation, Neuquen Basin, Argentina: Part I. integrating compositional kinetics and basin modeling

Summary: Improved understanding and prediction of petroleum expulsion, retention, and producibility from source rocks in the Lower Vaca Muerta Formation in the Neuquén Basin, Argentina were achieved through the integration of 3D basin modeling with customized compositional kinetics and retention modeling. The modeling results demonstrate basin-wide petroleum expulsion starting in the late Cretaceous and ceasing in the mid-Eocene, with different types of expulsion occurring at different thermal maturity levels, leading to changes in rock properties and petroleum composition.

Summary: The study of the Vaca Muerta-Quintuco (VM-Q) system in the Neuquen Basin of western Argentina analyzed sedimentology, mineralogy, and geochemistry to determine the factors leading to a paleoenvironmental change from a carbonate ramp to a mixed siliciclastic/carbonatic marine environment. The results indicated that changes in organic carbon isotope composition, clay mineralogy, trace elements, and stable isotopes can serve as valuable proxies for past ocean-climate variability, even after burial diagenesis.

Impact of tectonic shortening on fluid overpressure in petroleum system modelling: Insights from the Neuqu´en basin, Argentina

Summary: This study quantifies the influence of Andean tectonic deformation on pore pressure evolution in the Vaca-Muerta Formation of the Neuque?n foreland basin by coupling Petroleum System Modelling and a geomechanical simulator. The results suggest that Late Miocene to recent tectonic movements could explain most of the overpressure observed in the basin, while a shear-induced fracturing index indicates the likelihood of fracturing during a major Andean deformation phase. This research emphasizes the importance of a 3D geomechanical approach in predicting pore pressure in regions subjected to lateral tectonic loading.
