Whistler waves observed by Solar Orbiter/RPW between 0.5 AU and 1 AU

M. Kretzschmar et al.

Summary: The study aims to detect and characterize electromagnetic waves that can modify the electron distribution functions, with a focus on whistler waves. Through analysis of field fluctuations observed by Solar Orbiter spacecraft, it was found that a majority of waves are right-handed circularly polarized quasi-parallel whistler waves, with their occurrence rate doubling from 1 AU to 0.5 AU. These results are consistent with the regulation of heat flux by whistler heat flux instability.

Solar wind current sheets and deHoffmann-Teller analysis First results from Solar Orbiter's DC electric field measurements

K. Steinvall et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the quality of the low-frequency DC electric field measured by the Radio and Plasma Waves instrument on Solar Orbiter and investigates the possibility of using this data to estimate solar wind speed. Using the deHoffmann-Teller analysis, a simple model was developed to estimate solar wind speed based on electric and magnetic field measurements. The results suggest that the observed variations in the electric field are closely related to variations in the magnetic field, with potential for improving the estimation of solar wind speed.

Nonlinear Ion-acoustic Waves, Ion Holes, and Electron Holes in the Near-Sun Solar Wind

F. S. Mozer et al.

Summary: Nonlinear ion-acoustic waves, ion holes, and electron holes have been observed on the Parker Solar Probe at a heliocentric distance of 35 solar radii. These structures contain electric field spikes of several mV m(-1) and are observed inside or at boundaries of switchbacks in the background magnetic field, indicating electrostatic instabilities occurring to thermalize electron and ion beams.

First-year ion-acoustic wave observations in the solar wind by the RPW/TDS instrument on board Solar Orbiter

D. Pisa et al.

Summary: The study presents a year-long analysis of electrostatic fluctuations observed in the solar wind using the RPW/TDS instrument on Solar Orbiter. Results show that ion-acoustic waves were the most common wave emissions observed during the first year of the mission, with wave amplitude decreasing with increasing heliocentric distance.
