Heat treatment significantly increases the sharpness of silcrete stone tools

A. Key et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of heat treatment on the cutting performance of stone tools, using silcrete from South Africa's Western Cape region as a case study. The results indicate that heat-treated silcrete can result in significantly sharper cutting edges, with cutting forces halving and energy requirements reducing by approximately two-thirds.

Density measurements as a non-destructive approach to investigate the heat treatment of siliceous lithic artefacts

Fabio Santaniello et al.

Summary: Heat treatment of siliceous raw materials is an ancient evidence of pyrotechnology. Density measurement provides a clear indication of heat-treated archaeological lithic artifacts. This method is cost-effective, fast, and non-destructive, suitable for preliminary assessment of heat treatment of large lithic assemblages.
