Effects of lithium tungsten oxide coating on LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode material for lithium-ion batteries

Seong-Ju Sim et al.

Summary: Introducing a lithium tungsten oxide coating layer can improve the cycle stability and rate capability of the Ni-rich layered LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode material. The LWO layer acts as a protective layer between the electrolyte and the active material, enhancing surface stability and rate capability.

Enhancing the structure stability of Ni-rich LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode via encapsulating in negative thermal expansion nanocrystalline shell

Kai Du et al.

Summary: In this study, a negative thermal expansion material (ZVO) was used as a coating layer to enhance the structure stability and electrochemical performance of Ni-rich cathode material LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2 O2. The NCM622@1.0 wt % ZVO sample showed excellent cyclability and rate capability under high temperature cycling, indicating the potential of ZVO in improving the bulk structure stability and interface compatibility of modified NCM622.

A Three in One Strategy to Achieve Zirconium Doping, Boron Doping, and Interfacial Coating for Stable LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode

Ze Feng et al.

Summary: A three in one strategy using ZrB2 as a dopant is proposed to stabilize the crystal structure and surface of the Ni-rich cathode. Zr and B doping helps stabilize the crystal structure and prevent the formation of microcracks, while Zr also forms a coating with the surface lithium source to protect the surface and suppress interfacial phase transition.

Transition from elastic to plastic strain release in core-shell nanowires revealed by in-plane x-ray diffraction

Ali Al Hassan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strain evolution and relaxation process between the GaAs core and surrounding InxGa1-xAs shell in core-shell nanowire heterostructures grown on Si(111) substrates as the lattice mismatch increases. It was found that a transition from elastic to plastic strain release occurs for a shell indium content x > 0.5, leading to the growth of indium-rich mounds and an indium-poor coherent shell around the GaAs core. Small mounds were observed for indium contents x = 0.5 and 0.6 by scanning electron microscopy.

Calcium- and sulfate-functionalized artificial cathode-electrolyte interphases of Ni-rich cathode materials

Kwangeun Jung et al.

Summary: The addition of a calcium sulfate precursor during thermal treatment can create an artificial Ca- and SOx-functionalized CEI layer on the surface of Ni-rich NCM cathode materials, inhibiting electrolyte decomposition and improving cycling retention of lithium-ion batteries. The modified CEI layer effectively controls undesired surface reactions such as electrolyte decomposition and metal dissolution, leading to enhanced performance of the Ni-rich NCM cathodes.

Summary: The surface modification of NCM83 with silicon effectively balances high conductivity and good structural stability to improve electrochemical performance and long cycling stability. The resultant Si-NCM83 sample shows significantly increased capacity retention after 500 cycles compared to NCM83, attributed to reduced anisotropic volume change, structural stress-induced microcracks, and uniform primary particle shape accelerating lithium-ion diffusion.
