Cu-Al spinel-oxide catalysts for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol

Sutarat Thongratkaew et al.

Summary: The Cu-Al spinel-oxide catalyst CuAl2O4 demonstrates excellent activity in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, attributed to the synergistic effect between the reduced copper species and the copper spinel host. Compared to the impregnated catalyst, CuAl2O4 shows positive effects on water impurity tolerance and superiority in H2 dissociation active sites and reaction free energy.

RuO2-Ru/Hβ zeolite catalyst for high-yield direct conversion of xylose to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol

Rizki Insyani et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a one-pot conversion of xylose to THFOL using RuO2-Ru/H beta catalyst, achieving high THFOL yield through various synthesis methods and reaching almost complete conversion of xylose with a yield of 61.8%. The analysis revealed that the formation of RuO2 at specific sites promoted the direct conversion of FFA to THFOL, leading to a high yield and suppressing the formation of byproducts.

Atom efficient PtCu bimetallic catalysts and ultra dilute alloys for the selective hydrogenation of furfural

Martin J. Taylor et al.

Summary: Bimetallic nanoparticles of Pt:Cu exhibit superior catalytic activity and high selectivity in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of furfural, while Ultra Dilute Alloy (UDA) formed by the galvanic replacement of Cu atoms with Pt atoms shows exceptionally high initial rates of hydrogenation under modest hydrogen pressures, surpassing the performance of monometallic Pt and other bimetallic catalyst compositions.

Solid micellar Ru single-atom catalysts for the water-free hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid

Qiyan Wang et al.

Summary: The newly designed solid micellar Ru single-atom catalyst allows for efficient and stable water-free CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid, producing concentrated formate solutions. The incorporation of Ru(III) single sites into the MCM-41 walls creates a solid micelle structure, while the presence of CTA(+) surfactant in the pores of MCM-41 stabilizes the Ru sites and prevents catalyst deactivation. DFT modelling indicates that the reaction proceeds via heterolytic hydrogen splitting, forming a Ru-H species and subsequent hydride transfer to CO2.

Copper oxide functionalized chitosan hybrid hydrogels for highly efficient photocatalytic-reforming of biomass-based monosaccharides to lactic acid

Yancong Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a freezing-thawing strategy for the preparation of an alkaline CuO-chitosan hybrid hydrogel with highly efficient photocatalytic conversion of xylose to lactic acid. The synergistic effect between CuO and alkaline chitosan hydrogel enables a high lactic acid yield under a weak alkaline system, with a retained high yield after multiple cycles. The proposed system shows potential for industrial-scale production of lactic acid from biomass-derived sugars.
