Forecasting for COVID-19 has failed

John P. A. Ioannidis et al.

Summary: Epidemic forecasting has had a poor track record, especially highlighted by the failures during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, some of these problems can be addressed through careful modeling, consideration of multiple factors, and continuous evaluation of models based on their performance. Additionally, when major decisions are made based on forecasts, a holistic approach is needed to assess risks and harms.

Modelling within-host macrophage dynamics in influenza virus infection

Ke Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel mathematical model was developed to investigate the relationship between macrophage activation level and viral load in influenza infection. It was found that the level of macrophage activation may be negatively correlated with viral load when viral infectivity is sufficiently high. Temporary depletion of resting macrophages in response to viral infection was identified as a major driver for this negative relationship.

Post-lockdown abatement of COVID-19 by fast periodic switching

Michelangelo Bin et al.

Summary: The proposed high-frequency intermittent lockdown policy can effectively suppress the spread of the virus while allowing economic activities to continue. Built on rigorous mathematical evidence, this policy offers a new perspective on designing COVID-19 exit strategies from lockdown, with wide applicability to epidemiological models.

A time-modulated Hawkes process to model the spread of COVID-19 and the impact of countermeasures

Michele Garetto et al.

Summary: The study proposes a stochastic model based on the Hawkes process to describe the outbreak and mitigation of epidemics, which has been successfully applied to the COVID-19 outbreaks in Italy. The model can accurately capture specific features of the novel coronavirus, such as the impact of undetected and asymptomatic individuals on disease spread, and is important for studying the evolution of epidemics and different response strategies.

Modeling vaccination rollouts, SARS-CoV-2 variants and the requirement for non-pharmaceutical interventions in Italy

Giulia Giordano et al.

Summary: This study combines multiple models to predict the spread and consequences of COVID-19 cases, finding that non-pharmaceutical interventions have a greater impact on the epidemic evolution. Using a data-based model, different scenarios of vaccine rollouts and interventions are proposed to assess their impact on the pandemic.

The Ockham's razor applied to COVID-19 model fitting French data

Mirko Fiacchini et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a data-based simple model for fitting the Covid-19 pandemic data in France, showing that even a simple model with only two parameters can reproduce the time series of various indicators. This suggests that the debate on the suitability of more complex models for forecasting pandemic evolution may be stimulated.

Effectively managing diagnostic tests to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy

Lorenzo Lampariello et al.

Summary: This study aims to help tackle the spread of COVID-19 in Italy by proposing a mathematical program to model the number of diagnostic tests Italian regions must perform to maximize disease detection capability. The approach is simple and uses easily obtainable data, making it easy to address the problem with standard optimization tools. Results obtained when applying this method to the Italian case seem promising.

Give more data, awareness and control to individual citizens, and they will help COVID-19 containment

Mirco Nanni et al.

Summary: The rapid spread of COVID-19 requires quick and effective tracking of virus transmission chains and early detection of outbreaks, especially as lockdown measures are lifted. A decentralized approach to contact-tracing apps offers better protection of citizens' privacy and allows for detailed information gathering for infected individuals in a privacy-preserving manner, enabling more effective contact tracing and early detection of outbreak hotspots.
