Ferroptosis: mechanisms, biology and role in disease

Xuejun Jiang et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis, as a form of regulated cell death driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation, has seen significant growth in research in recent years. Studies have focused on molecular mechanisms, regulation, and functions of ferroptosis, linking this cell death modality to various pathologies and proposing its roles in normal physiology and potential therapeutic targeting.

Vitamin E deficiency dysregulates thiols, amino acids and related molecules during zebrafish embryogenesis

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the molecular mechanism of Vitamin E in embryogenesis, revealing that Vitamin E deficiency leads to complex biochemical pathway changes, with betaine playing a key role in maintaining glutathione homeostasis. Additionally, changes in amino acids and thiols during embryonic development are associated with Vitamin E deficiency.

Alpha-Tocopherol Metabolites (The Vitamin E Metabolome) and Their Interindividual Variability during Supplementation

Desiree Bartolini et al.

Summary: New metabolomics protocols have allowed for the exploration of individual differences in the metabolism of alpha-tocopherol, revealing marked variability in the metabolites. Enzymatic metabolites showed significant interindividual variability, while free radical-derived metabolite alpha-tocopheryl quinone demonstrated a significant correlation with post-supplementation levels of alpha-tocopherol. The study also found that the expression of certain target genes of alpha-tocopherol in leukocytes was stimulated by supplementation, highlighting the importance of considering intrinsic variability in future studies.

Vitamin E Deficiency Disrupts Gene Expression Networks during Zebrafish Development

Brian Head et al.

Summary: The study found that Vitamin E deficiency in zebrafish embryos resulted in disruption in gene expression, metabolic dysfunction, and embryonic structure formation, with mTOR playing a major role in these changes, ultimately leading to lethal outcomes as early as 12 hpf.

Association of serum levels of antioxidant micronutrients with mortality in US adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002

Noah C. Peeri et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between serum vitamin E levels and all-cause mortality. No other antioxidants were found to be associated with mortality in the overall analysis. The associations between serum antioxidant levels and mortality varied by race/ethnicity, suggesting a non-linear relationship for all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
