A holin/peptidoglycan hydrolase-dependent protein secretion system

Tracy Palmer et al.

Summary: Gram-negative bacteria have evolved various pathways to secrete proteins, with the involvement of holins and cell wall-editing enzymes. The identity of the cell wall-editing enzymes varies across different biological systems, indicating that the secretion pathway may have evolved multiple times. Genomic analysis supports the conservation of this pathway, which is implicated in the secretion of hydrolytic enzymes and toxins in a range of bacteria.

Phage infection and sub-lethal antibiotic exposure mediate Enterococcus faecalis type VII secretion system dependent inhibition of bystander bacteria

Anushila Chatterjee et al.

Summary: Phage infection of Enterococcus faecalis induces transcription of T7SS genes and leads to cell contact dependent antagonism of Gram positive bystander bacteria. Deletion of a T7SS component abolishes the killing of bystanders, while disruption of an immunity gene confers protection. Additionally, sub-lethal doses of antibiotics activate T7SS expression and antibacterial activity against bystander bacteria. This study suggests that phage therapy and antibiotic exposure can impact non-target bacteria in polymicrobial communities.

Extreme genetic diversity in the type VII secretion system of Listeria monocytogenes suggests a role in bacterial antagonism

Kieran Bowran et al.

Summary: The study reveals genetic diversity in T7SS-encoding genes and substrate proteins across Listeria monocytogenes species, with EssC variants correlated with distinct subsets of genes for likely substrates and accessory proteins. The findings strongly suggest an important role of T7SS in bacterial antagonism in this species.
