Socio-eco-evolutionary dynamics in cities

Simone Des Roches et al.

Summary: Cities are complex systems regulated by interactions between nature and human society. Characteristics of human society create a heterogeneous environment that influences and is influenced by ecological and evolutionary processes. Urban ecology and evolutionary biology research focuses on contemporary evolution of species with ecological and social significance, but rarely fully integrate human social patterns and processes.

Natural history collections are critical resources for contemporary and future studies of urban evolution

Allison J. Shultz et al.

Summary: Urban environments are rapidly changing and impacting the evolution of organisms. Natural history collections provide crucial resources for urban evolution studies. However, there is a need to increase strategic deposition of specimens and other materials to ensure availability for future research.

Evidence for the evolution of thermal tolerance, but not desiccation tolerance, in response to hotter, drier city conditions in a cosmopolitan, terrestrial isopod

Aaron R. Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The study on terrestrial isopods in urban and rural environments reveals different plastic and evolutionary responses to urban heat islands. Body size of isopods is influenced by rearing temperature, with larger size improving desiccation tolerance. The variations associated with urban heat islands may not necessarily contribute to evolutionary changes in physiological traits.

Urbanization is associated with shifts in bumblebee body size, with cascading effects on pollination

Panagiotis Theodorou et al.

Summary: Urbanization has significant effects on body size of common bumblebee species, with foragers in cities being larger and body size positively correlated with road density. High ambient temperature was associated with smaller body size and increased variation in all three species. Community-weighted mean body size and its variation also increased with urbanization, indirectly affecting pollination services.

Effects of site-selection bias on estimates of biodiversity change

Andrea Mentges et al.

Summary: The study found that site-selection biases have a significant impact on estimates of biodiversity, especially in predicting biodiversity loss. To minimize biases, systematic site-selection schemes, maximizing sampling area, and the use of biodiversity measures less sensitive to rare species are recommended.

Urban evolution of invasive species

Jesse B. Borden et al.

Summary: Urban areas can drive rapid evolution of non-native species, enhancing invader establishment, spread, and ecological impact. Additionally, ecological opportunity in urban areas may accelerate invader evolution, highlighting the importance of studying urban evolution of invaders for predicting and managing invasive species globally.

Adaptive Evolution in Citites: Progress and Misconceptions

Max R. Lambert et al.

Summary: Despite current narratives suggesting pervasive urban adaptation across taxa and cities, a review of hundreds of studies revealed only six comprehensive examples of species adaptively evolving to urbanization. Urban environments pose diverse and interacting selective pressures that challenge the limits of adaptation, offering unique opportunities for addressing fundamental questions in evolutionary biology and conserving biodiversity in cities. Capitalizing on these opportunities requires appropriate research methods and accurate narrative dissemination.

In a nutshell, a reciprocal transplant experiment reveals local adaptation and fitness trade-offs in response to urban evolution in an acorn-dwelling ant

Ryan A. Martin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that urbanization affects the survival of ants, and there are differences in adaptation between urban and rural ants. Rural ants in urban environments are more vulnerable in summer, whereas urban ants adapted to rural environments are more vulnerable in winter. The findings suggest that species may not keep pace with anthropogenic change, with urban ants showing lower levels of local adaptation compared to rural ants in their ancestral rural environments.

Physiological adaptation to cities as a proxy to forecast global-scale responses to climate change

Sarah E. Diamond et al.

Summary: Cities are proving to be important locations for studying compensatory responses to climatic warming through phenotypic plasticity and evolutionary change. Research has shown significant plasticity and evolution in thermal tolerance trait responses in urban heat islands. Evidence suggests that both mechanisms contribute to phenotypic shifts in thermal tolerance, and the magnitude of shifts in urban thermal tolerance phenotypes is comparable to other environmental temperature variations.

Urbanization is associated with modifications in DNA methylation in a small passerine bird

Hannah Watson et al.

Summary: Urbanization drives phenotypic changes with differences in DNA methylation patterns between urban and forest-dwelling birds, particularly in the liver. Differentially methylated genomic sites in the liver are associated with regulatory regions and expressed genes, while blood shows under-representation of regulatory regions and nonexpressed genes in differentially methylated sites.
