Elucidation of the Synergistic Effect of Dopants and Vacancies on Promoted Selectivity for CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Zhongjian Li et al.

Summary: A new type of SnO2 nanosheet with simultaneous N dopants and oxygen vacancies (V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS) exhibits high catalytic selectivity for CO2 conversion to formate (HCOO-) through a likely synergistic effect. The low coordination Sn-N moieties, regulated by V-O and N dopants, serve as active sites with optimal electronic and geometric structures. Theoretical calculations show that the reaction free energy of HCOO* protonation is decreased on the V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS, enhancing HCOO- selectivity and inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Inversely Tuning the CO2 Electroreduction and Hydrogen Evolution Activity on Metal Oxide via Heteroatom Doping

Jiajun Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that tuning the electronic states of ZnO by replacing the Zn site with heteroatoms can significantly modulate the activities of CO2RR and HER inversely, leading to a dramatic tuning of the practical CO2RR performance. The correlation between electronic states, reaction free energies, and practical activity is also highlighted, providing insights for engineering efficient CO2RR electrocatalysts through tunable composition and electronic structures.

Enhanced Cuprophilic Interactions in Crystalline Catalysts Facilitate the Highly Selective Electroreduction of CO2 to CH4

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Cu(I)-based catalysts are essential for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, and in this study, two stable copper(I)-based catalysts with inherent cuprophilic interactions were synthesized for highly selective CO2-to-CH4 conversion. The substitution of sulfate radicals with hydroxyl radicals led to a dynamic crystal structure transition, enhancing the cuprophilic interactions inside the catalyst structure. The enhanced cuprophilic interactions in NNU-33(H) showed outstanding CH4 selectivity, representing the best crystalline catalyst for electrocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 conversion.

Bi-Sn Oxides for Highly Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Formate in a Wide Potential Window

Jianjian Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, highly stable SnO2/Bi2O3 oxide catalysts were obtained by distributing SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface of Bi2O3 sheets. The enhanced stability and high selectivity of the catalyst in CO2 electroreduction reaction were attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between SnO2 and Bi2O3, as well as the improved adsorption of HCOO* intermediate. The SnO2/Bi2O3 catalyst showed excellent performance with a high FEC1 value of 90% and a selectivity of HCOOH above 76% in a wide potential window and a long duration.
