Age-related changes in ACL morphology during skeletal growth and maturation are different between females and males

Shayan Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: As individuals age, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in both males and females undergoes changes in length, thickness, and angle, with males showing a larger increase in ACL cross-sectional area-to-length ratio over time. Despite initial similarities, adolescent males have significantly longer and thicker ACLs compared to females of the same age. The smaller ACL size and lower growth rate in females may contribute to the higher risk of ACL injuries in this group. Further research is needed to understand the factors underlying these differences.

Summary: This study used a validated computational model to determine ACL force and its contributors during a standardized dynamic task, finding that ACL loading is primarily generated through muscle during movements, with the gastrocnemius playing an important role in ACL loading.
