Perspective: Vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity - plausibly linked by latitude, ethnicity, impacts on cytokines, ACE2 and thrombosis

J. M. Rhodes et al.

Summary: There is substantial evidence supporting a link between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity, although the evidence is indirect. Community-based placebo-controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation may be challenging, but further evidence may come from large cohort studies with prescribing data or serum 25(OH) vitamin D level assays. In the meantime, vitamin D supplementation is strongly recommended for individuals at risk of deficiency.
