Genotype and Phenotype Heterogeneity in Neonatal Diabetes: A Single Centre Experience in Turkey

Yasemin Denkboy Ongen et al.

Summary: Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) can be transient or permanent, and is mostly caused by genetic mutations. Early diagnosis is crucial for selecting patients who will respond to oral treatment. Patients with permanent NDM and mutations in KCNJ11 and ABCC8 genes showed significant improvement in C-peptide levels and better glycemic control after starting sulfonylurea treatment.

Summary: Treating ABCC8-PNDM patients with sulfonylureas long-term results in excellent glycemic control. Most patients show mild neurological features, which may improve after transfer to sulfonylureas, emphasizing the importance of genetic testing and neurodevelopmental assessment.
