Outer membrane permeabilization by the membrane attack complex sensitizes Gram-negative bacteria to antimicrobial proteins in serum and phagocytes

Dani A. C. Heesterbeek et al.

Summary: This study identified how different components of the human immune system work together to degrade the complex cell envelope of Gram-negative bacteria. The complement-dependent Membrane Attack Complex (MAC) formation permeabilizes the outer membrane of bacteria, allowing antimicrobial proteins to reach their targets. This knowledge may lead to the development of new antimicrobial strategies to combat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
