Neutron radiography for local modelling of thermochemical heat storage reactors: Case study on SrCl2-NH3

Anastasiia Karabanova et al.

Summary: Thermochemical heat storage technology has the potential to balance intermittent renewables and increase energy system efficiency, but commercial products are limited and technology improvement is needed for larger market penetration. To advance this technology, particular attention must be paid to studying processes inside reactors and developing validated numerical models for optimization.

Sr(NH3)8Cl2-Expanded Natural Graphite composite for thermochemical heat storage applications studied by in-situ neutron imaging

Perizat Berdiyeva et al.

Summary: This study used in-situ neutron imaging to investigate the ammonia sorption reaction in a SrCl2-Expanded Natural Graphite (ENG) composite, revealing the formation of Sr(NH3)(8)Cl-2 upon ammonia uptake and the stepwise release of ammonia resulting in the formation of Sr(NH3)Cl-2. Neutron imaging also allowed for the evaluation of heat conductivity in the stainless-steel honeycomb and showed that heat is primarily transferred through the ENG matrix. Additionally, neutron tomography was performed to ensure the stability of the THS system and composite material during ammonia cycling experiments.

Intrinsic kinetics in local modelling of thermochemical heat storage systems

Anastasiia Karabanova et al.

Summary: Thermochemical heat storage is vital for the European energy system transition, with reactor efficiency playing a crucial role in determining the storage capacity and heat recovery rate. This study successfully derived intrinsic kinetic equations for ammonia sorption on metal halides, demonstrating their ability to accurately predict experimental data over a wide range of pressure-temperature conditions. The use of intrinsic parameters in local modeling of sorption reactions was found to significantly improve simulation results compared to literature kinetics.
