Summary: The development of PGM-free electrocatalysts derived from inexpensive and environmentally friendly biomasses for ORR has attracted significant interest. Fe-N-C materials have emerged as a promising alternative to Pt-based materials, exhibiting high activity and selectivity. The use of chitosan as a nitrogen-containing biomass for Fe-N-C catalyst preparation, followed by thermochemical conversion, offers a highly graphitized material with optimal mesoporosity and enhanced catalytic activity. RRDE technique was utilized to assess the material's performance, demonstrating a linear correlation between catalytic activity and Fe-N-x active sites.

Alessandro Facchin et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical activity of a HOPG-supported iron octaethylporphyrin chloride film as a working electrode for the oxygen reduction reaction was investigated. The Fe-III/Fe-II redox process was found to be quasi-reversible, with O2 mainly being reduced to H2O. Using RRDE and EC-STM techniques, it was possible to observe the change in redox state from Fe-III to Fe-II and the adsorption and depletion of O2 at the iron center.
