Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool to characterize ceria-based catalysts

Stephane Loridant

Summary: This paper reviews the various opportunities offered by Raman spectroscopy for advanced characterization of ceria-based catalysts, including spectral modifications induced by nanocrystallinity, defects, doping, reduction, identification of supported molecular species, isolated atoms, nanoclusters, surface modes, hydroxyl groups, and reaction intermediates. In situ/operando studies for environmental catalysis are also summarized, highlighting Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for characterizing ceria-based catalysts.

Dynamic structure of active sites in ceria-supported Pt catalysts for the water gas shift reaction

Yuanyuan Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the dynamic characteristics of a Pt/CeO2 system for the water gas shift reaction, showing the formation and transformation of perimeter Pt-0-O vacancy-Ce3+ sites that regulate adsorbate behaviors and play a key role in the catalytic mechanism. The dynamic nature of these sites is crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism.

Insight into the mechanism of the water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts using combined operando spectroscopies

Marc Ziemba et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanism of the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts with different ceria terminations. Results showed that the presence of gold on different facets of ceria played a facet-dependent role in oxygen dynamics, suggesting that surface properties have a significant impact on reactivity. The study also highlighted the importance of factors such as dissociative adsorption of water and desorption of CO2/H2 in the reaction process.
