Functional near-infrared spectroscopy during a decision-making task in patients with major depressive disorder

Syeda F. Husain et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with major depressive disorder exhibit reduced haemodynamic response in several cortical regions of the frontal lobe compared to healthy controls during decision-making processes. Moreover, the severity of major depressive disorder is associated with a decline in oxy-haemoglobin levels in the right orbitofrontal cortex. These neurophysiological alterations may impact the decision-making capacity of patients with major depressive disorder.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Physical and Mental Health in Lower and Upper Middle-Income Asian Countries: A Comparison Between the Philippines and China

Michael Tee et al.

Summary: The study compared the psychological impacts and mental health levels between people from the Philippines (LMIC) and China (UMIC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Filipino respondents showed significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared to Chinese respondents, with higher likelihood of reporting COVID-19 symptoms and concerns about family contracting the virus. The findings suggest the need for widespread COVID-19 testing in LMIC to address the adverse mental health effects observed.
