Livestock ingest the microplastics found in the soil, and can potentially become a source of microplastic contamination when they graze on other farms. Further research should focus on estimating the direct impact of plastic mulching on the plastic content in animal feces and understanding the potential health effects of plastic residues on livestock.

Summary: This study found a significant enrichment of microplastics in soil after long-term pig manure application, potentially posing a risk to agricultural soils. Microplastics from pig manure may gradually weather and degrade in the soil. The average accumulation rate of microplastics in agricultural soil with long-term pig manure application was estimated to be 3.50 +/- 1.71 million particles ha(-1) a(-1).
