Groundwater discharge impacts marine isotope budgets of Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba

Kimberley K. Mayfield et al.

Summary: Groundwater-derived solute fluxes have traditionally been considered less important than riverine fluxes in marine isotope budgets, however, this study shows that they play a significant role in mediating the magnitude and isotopic composition of terrestrially derived solute fluxes to the ocean. The isotopic compositions of groundwater-derived solutes differ from global riverine averages, a factor that should be prioritized in Earth-system models.

A place for subterranean estuaries in the coastal zone

Carlos Rocha et al.

Summary: Subterranean estuaries (STEs) are important interconnected systems that drive water quality, ecology, and biogeochemical cycles in nearby coastal ecosystems. However, lack of awareness and recognition of STE functions, as well as compartmentalization of surface and groundwater systems in research, hinder a holistic understanding of coastal ecosystems and slow down the development of science-based ecosystem management approaches.

Habitat Partitioning in the Marine Sector of Karst Subterranean Estuaries and Bermuda's Marine Caves: Benthic Foraminiferal Evidence

Jacquelyn N. Cresswell et al.

Summary: This study found that benthic habitat partitioning in the oxygenated marine sectors of Karst subterranean estuaries is strongly influenced by the source and quantity of particulate organic matter delivered to the benthos. Analysis of benthic foraminifera data from several large flooded cave systems in Bermuda revealed spatial variability in benthic communities based on the organic matter sources and isotopic values.

Saltwater Intrusion and Submarine Groundwater Discharge: Acceleration of Biogeochemical Reactions in Changing Coastal Aquifers

Willard S. Moore et al.

Summary: Saltwater intrusion into freshwater coastal aquifers is a global issue caused by over-pumping of freshwater and sea level rise. This intrusion impacts drinking water, agriculture, industry, and alters the biogeochemistry of subterranean estuaries, resulting in the release of nutrient-rich groundwater into the ocean. Climate change exacerbates sea level variations, potentially increasing saltwater intrusion and promoting biological productivity, but also posing risks to the environment and local ecology.
