Strategies to reduce use of antidepressants

Tony Kendrick

Summary: Antidepressant prescribing has been increasing year on year, but long-term use may lead to side effects and withdrawal symptoms. It is recommended that general practitioners avoid routine prescribing of antidepressants and actively review long-term use, suggesting slow tapering off for patients who are well. More research is needed to establish the incidence of withdrawal symptoms in patients coming off antidepressants and to test different tapering strategies through large randomised controlled trials.
