Summary: Researchers have found that the thermal runaway of magnesium-sulfur batteries is correlated with the change in electrolyte vapor pressure, with over-pressure building up during cell heating, triggering thermal runaway at 20-45K above the electrolyte boiling point. The different behaviors in performance, safety, and cost among the three ether type electrolytes stem from variations in CH2CH2O chain lengths.
