Impact of Pregnancy and Glucocorticoid Treatment on NF-kB and MUC5AC in Mucosa of Rat Larynx

Burak Ulkumen et al.

Summary: This study revealed the physiological expression and distribution of NF-kappa B and MUC5AC in the rat laryngeal mucosa for the first time. The impact of pregnancy and glucocorticoid treatment on these biomolecules was shown, with NF-kappa B expression decreased and MUC5AC expression increased. A negative correlation between NF-kappa B and MUC5AC expression was also discovered in the rat larynx.

Sex differences in the acoustic features of social play-induced 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations: A detailed spectrographic analysis in wild-type Sprague-Dawley and Cacna1c haploinsufficient rats

Theresa M. Kisko et al.

Summary: Sexual dimorphisms are evident in the emission of 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations during rough-and-tumble play in juvenile rats, with females showing reduced emission rates compared to males. These sex differences are modulated by the Cacna1c gene and result in a masculinized social play repertoire in female rats with Cacna1c haploinsufficiency.

Effects of Vocal Training on Thyroarytenoid Muscle Neuromuscular Junctions and Myofibers in Young and Older Rats

Adrianna C. Shembel et al.

Summary: Vocal training positively impacted NMJ morphology in the thyroarytenoid muscle of both young and old rats, resulting in increased USV numbers, duration, and intensity. However, vocal training did not significantly affect muscle fiber type and size, indicating its main improvement lies in neuromuscular efficiency.

Reduced emission of alarm 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations during fear conditioning in rats lacking the serotonin transporter

Maria Willadsen et al.

Summary: The study found that SERT deficiency has an impact on fear-related behavior and alarm 22-kHz USV in rats, particularly more prominent in females. Rats lacking SERT may have social deficits that hinder them from effectively using 22-kHz USV as a socio-affective signal to warn conspecifics.

The effects of the estrous cycle, menopause, and recording condition on female rat ultrasonic vocalizations

Charles Lenell et al.

Summary: The study found that there were differences in USV acoustics across different recording conditions, but no significant differences between control and ovariectomized groups. USVs produced in isolation had lower frequency and complexity parameters. Additionally, for control rats, USV parameters changed depending on the estrous state.
